CHPC resources are available to qualified faculty, students (under faculty supervision), and researchers from any Utah institution of higher education. Users can request accounts for CHPC computer systems by filing the Account Request Form.

CHPC uses weighted charging on the shared computational clusters. Beginning April 1, 2007, one service unit will equal 1 walltime hour of a 2Ghz processor (prior to 4/1/07 1 SU =1 walltime hour on 1 Ghz processor). Existing Allocations will be scaled appropriately beginning April 1st, 2007. Usage for other cpu speeds will be scaled to this metric. for example:

WalltimeNode descriptionproc speedSU charge
walltime*num_cores*speed/metric
1.01 Dual Proc(2ppn)1.4Ghz1*2*1.4/2.0=1.4 SU
1.01 Dual Proc(2ppn)1.8Ghz1*2*1.8/2.0=3.6 SU
1.01 Dual-Dual Proc(4ppn - e.g. sanddunearch)2.4Ghz1*4*2.4/2.0=4.8 SU
1.01 Dual-Quad Proc(8ppn - e.g. updraft)2.8Ghz1*8*2.4/2.0=11.2 SU

Research groups requiring priority time SUs on a given machine and/or special resources such as a large number of processors, large memory space, or extraordinarily large files, may request these resources by manually submitting an Allocation Form to the Director of CHPC, along with a proposal or by submitting a request online (see below). Requests may be for up to 4 quarters at a time and will be due the first day of September, December, March and June for allocations beginning the following quarter:

QuarterQuarter DefinitionRequest Due Date
WinterJanuary 1 - March 31December 1
SpringApril 1 - June 30March 1
SummerJuly 1 - September 30June 1
FallOctober 1 - December 31September 1

The request must be made by the principal investigator of the project, who must be a faculty member.

Along with the form we require that you address the following questions (no more than two pages):

  • General description of the project.
  • Significance of the project and expected impact in the field.
  • Describe the numerical techniques or third party software that will be used in the project.
  • Describe the characteristics of your computational results and the methodology for analyzing and presenting the results. If applicable, describe the visualization resources necessary for presenting your results.
  • Describe the computer resources available to you in your research group, department, or college, list allocations you already have elsewhere (SDSC, NCSA, Teragrid etc.). Explain the distinction between your proposed work and work already covered by your existing allocations and explain why CHPC resources are sought.
  • Resources required. Please indicate CPU time, memory, disk space, etc. and explain how you arrived at your estimated figures.
  • Indicate sources of funding for the project, including off campus computer time. Describe efforts, if any, to obtain further support.
  • If this project has been previously supported by CHPC, please describe the results obtained including: student thesis, conference papers, and journal papers (please include preprints or reprints for CHPC files).

Please make sure all areas of application are completed, sign the form, and return to:

** If you currently have a CHPC account, you do NOT need to send in an account application form each time you apply for allocated time. Only those who do not have a current CHPC account need send in an application form.

You may alternatively submit your allocation request online using our Electronic Allocation Request Process.

  1. Login with your campus uNID and password.
  2. Fill out the form completely and click the "Create" button.

CHPC allows users to submit allocation proposals after the aforementioned deadlines with some restrictions. The request cannot be for more than 5000 SUs, for use on only one platform, and the allocation is only good for the current quarter. There are no renewals of Quick Allocations. The review of these proposals is expedited and awards are given in a few days.

To apply please see our "Quick Allocation" form.

Proposals will be evaluated by the CHPC Computer Allocation Committee, consisting of the Director of CHPC and representatives from the Faculty Advisory Board. The committee will meet during the month prior to allocation period, to consider allocations for the following quarter. Before each meeting, CHPC will provide an estimate of the resources available for allocation in the four upcoming quarters as well as any other technical information the committee may deem appropriate.

Quick reviews will be performed by the Director of CHPC, and awards given for up to 5000 SUs for the current quarter only.

Allocations unused in any quarter cannot be carried over to the next, but users will be allowed to use any unallocated or unused resources at the lowest system priority by submitting to the low priority queues.
