CHPC Interruption of Samba mounts – Tuesday April 12th, 2016 starting at 2pm

UPDATE:

The patch and reboot of the Window Servers of Kachina and Swasey is complete.  Users are free to start jobs on these systems.

We are still waiting for the linux patch to be available for CentOS6 but expect that it will be available shortly. When it is available we will proceed on the updates on the file servers.

IMPORTANT– It is critical that all users confirm that all desktops they use get patched. If CHPC admins your desktop we will be checking that this has occurred.  The windows patch is now available. All users who self admin any desktops should check for updates and confirm that they were applied.  If you have any questions please address them to issues@chpc.utah.edu

MAC users should watch for pending updates and confirm that they are properly applied.

We have been notified of a crucial security bug in the SMB protocol which must be patched as soon as possible.

This impacts CHPC’s samba services which include our file servers and Windows systems.  We expect the security update to be needed on all systems;( Linux, Mac and Windows).

The interruption will be focused on patching the following systems starting at 2 PM:

  • Windows Servers(Kachina, Swasey) – We expect these updates to require a reboot of the server.  If this is the case all running sessions will be lost.
  • File Servers– (i.e. group and home directories) – as these will be done with rolling updates, there will not be any service outages but short hangs may be experienced

Thanks for your patience and understanding.
