Use of General CHPC Interactive (Login) Nodes

Date Posted: June 27th, 2016

Back in early May we started to run a script that would identify and log processes on the general CHPC login nodes that were in violation of the login (interactive) node acceptable use policy (https://www.chpc.utah.edu/news/latest_news/2016_jan/20160119.php)  as well as send automated messages to the user to let them know of the violation.  Late May we suspended the email notifications to the user due to a bug in the script.  This has now been resolved and we are again resuming the  email notifications.  If you receive a message regarding your usage and have any questions on why your usage is being flagged or if you believe that one or more of the processes should not have been flagged for being in violation, please send the message along with a request for additional information or discussion to helpdesk@chpc.utah.edu

As a reminder there are two levels of messages users will receive, which can easily be identified by their subject lines:

  1. The first message has the subject line “WARNING: Potential Violation of Usage Policy on HOSTHAME” .  In this message there is a sorted list of all processes you are running on the host; users should use this message to identify and kill processes that are against the stated usage policy.
  2. The second has the subject line “ALERT: Interactive task might be killed on HOSTNAME”.  In this message the process in violation of the usage policy is typically flagged with a  leading ‘à’.  Users should either kill the flagged process(es) or if they are uncertain of why the process is being flagged contact us via helpdesk@chpc.utah.edu. This message will also go to CHPC staff and we will kill the processes without further notification to the user when appropriate.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns
